Teen Accounts

KC Fairfax Federal Credit Union has launched Claim Your Youth! Claim Your Youth is a teen specific marketing program that is designed for young members aged 13-18. The program establishes and maintains a relationship with future adult members and helps them solidify their financial independence. Claim Your Youth is designed to answer common finance questions that hinder teens’ ability to take control of their finances, using topics and content that is relevant to them. Claim Your Youth helps teens work through one of the most challenging periods of financial literacy development and, in doing so, puts your credit union at the front of the line for their future business.

Claim Your Youth empowers young adult members to be in control of their financial future from the outset. It pushes them to a holistic understanding of the larger financial system and their place within it.

The new teen program is just one more way KC Fairfax Federal Credit Union is working to serve its members and fulfill the “people helping people” philosophy of credit unions.

“If we can help our teenagers to better understand money and finances now, they will be a lot better off in the future,” said PJ Watson “We’re committed to help our teen members get a head start on their finances.”

Grade: F

That's the average report card 12th graders earned for financial literacy in 2006. For about a decade, the Jump$tart Coalition® has been surveying high-school seniors about personal finance.

What our youth don't know is shocking. For example, only 23% understand that interest/dividends on savings accounts may be taxable. Only 40% realize they could lose their health insurance if their parents become unemployed.

Achieving economic prosperity is difficult. It's especially hard for young people who've never learned how to manage money. Your credit union is ideally positioned to respond because we believe in the power of education. We're here to help you launch the youth in your life toward financial independence.

Join. As a start, open a savings account for each child in your family at the credit union. As soon as your children can write, have them fill out deposit and withdrawal slips. Guide teenagers through using a debit card and balancing a checkbook.

Share. Include your children in your household finance discussions. Show them how you budget income and expenses. As their skills improve, give them challenges—such as finding a better cell-phone plan, calculating the total monthly cost of owning a car, or sticking to a budget with back-to-school or holiday spending.

Coach. Remind your children to ask for help when they need it. And turn to your credit union when you want help. Our tradition of service and philosophy of self-help make KC Fairfax Federal Credit Union and all credit unions a natural partner in pursuing financial security.

KC Fairfax Federal Credit Union is here to help kids save!

Children at KC Fairfax Federal Credit Union now have an ecology and savings program designed especially for them.

Membership in the Johnny Appleseed Junior Ecology Club is open to any child under 12 years of age. There is no charge to join the program. It is available to any child who wishes to learn more about ecology and/or saving money on a regular basis.

The Johnny Appleseed Junior Ecology Club is one of the most successful programs of its kind and has helped thousands of youngsters across the country learn about conserving our nation’s environment as well as learn the importance of regular saving.

Upon enrolling, a child receives a colorful Johnny Appleseed calendar for current year, which features ecology pictures drawn by other Appleseed members. The calendar also includes a dime-saver apple bank and an official Appleseed membership card. Every other month, a special savings incentive is offered by KCFFCU to encourage Club members to return to the financial institution and add to their savings accounts. The incentive is always a fun, useful item that can be enjoyed by any child. Incentives offered recently included a twister top, a yo-yo, play dough, and hackie sack.

KC Fairfax Federal Credit Union’s Johnny Appleseed program provides these benefits for kid members from ages 0-12. - KC Fairfax Federal Credit Union will make the first deposit into your account of $5.*

This system of prompting regular savings is very successful in teaching children good savings habits, as well as the importance of ecology.

KCFFCU is offering the Johnny Appleseed Junior Ecology Program to all children under the age of 12 who are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
